Editing
I believe that editing is my greatest strength. I began my career as an Editorial Assistant at To Press & Beyond, where I developed my copyediting and proofreading skills while working with authors to develop and refine the books of their hearts. Since then, I’ve worked as a proofreader and editor for major companies and foundations, which carved the path for my latest role at Novelly.
In my role at Novelly, I developed a program called The Rising Voices Collective in which I worked with young, diverse writers to amplify their short stories, featuring characters who looked and loved like them. I also led four writers as they developed a “choose your own adventure” series of webcomics, led a team of 15 writers for the Novelly blog, and acted as the Editor-in-Chief for Novelly’s quarterly digital literary collections. I’ve edited short fiction, narrative non-fiction, interviews, long-form articles, and the Novelly ebook—2020 Sucks & Other Poems About Hope.
My passion is for helping writers dig into the vision for their work and bring it to life in a way that meets that vision. I am experienced in developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading, and have an affinity for all three.
Samples of my favorite work are below!
2020 sucks
At the end of 2020, we released an ebook at Novelly filled with poems and short narratives that illuminated young people’s mindsets toward the year, and their hopes for a brighter future. It was released originally on Kickstarter, and since has been released publicly.
River of stars
A short story that emerged from the Rising Voices Collective, River of Stars is a beautiful, sapphic retelling of the Chinese folktale “The Cowherd and the Weaver.” I worked one-on-one with the writer, Mira Jiang, as her editor from conception to published story.
Style guides
I have found that the best way to achieve success in an editing role is to create a personalized Editorial Style Guide for each company, individual, or project I work with. Consistency and detail are the pillars of editing, and my style guides ensure that we are committed to both.
